The microform technology covered by the series of WIPO Standards ST.7, ST.7/A, ST.7/B, ST.7/C, ST.7/D, ST.7/E, and ST.7/F has been replaced with new IT products (e.g., CD‑ROM, DVD, etc.) since these Standards were first adopted during the 1980's. Therefore, due to the very limited use of this media by industrial property offices, no further review of these Standards has been carried out since the year 2000 (e.g., according to the decisions by the SCIT Standards and Documentation Working Group, at its second session, on December 6, 2002, Standard ST.7/A was not updated to incorporate revision to Standard ST.6; according to the decisions by the SCIT Standards and Documentation Working Group, at its fourth session, on January 30, 2004, Standards ST.7/A and ST.7/E were not updated to incorporate revision to Standard ST.8). It is not expected that any additional offices will be providing data on this media in the future. (See paragraph 51 of document SCIT/SDWG/8/14.)
The recommendation provides for a standardized method of identifying roll microfilm files of patent and patent‑related documents (e.g., on roll film containers, on roll microfilms and in the corresponding descriptive literature).
The recommendation applies to the content, language and presentation of the data by which these roll microfilm files may be identified and is therefore subdivided into three parts dealing with these three subjects.
For the purposes of this recommendation, the expression “patent documents” includes patents for inventions, inventors’ certificates, utility certificates, utility models, patents or certificates of addition, inventors’ certificates of addition, utility certificates of addition, etc., and published applications therefor.
For the purposes of this recommendation, the expression “patent‑related documents” covers official gazettes, indexes relating to patent documents, etc.
For the purposes of this recommendation, the terms used in respect of micrographics are defined in WIPO Standard ST.7.
For the purposes of this recommendation, the expression “descriptive literature” means any document containing data allowing identification of roll microfilms of patent and patent‑related documents, such as dockets, lists, etc.
The following identification data are applicable for use as indicated in paragraph 9:

The data allowing identification of microfilm files produced for potential exchange with, or transfer to, patent offices should be given in English.

1 In the case of a classified microfilm file of patent documents, the descriptive literature should contain as complete information as possible about the kind of documents and countries of publication. If space does not permit indicating specific information on the container, it is sufficient to note “various” to indicate that more than one kind of document is included on the film, and “several” to denote that the documents of more than one country are included. No notations are required on the microfilm.
